Session Description

Protecting your station’s infrastructure has never been more challenging. TV and radio stations have been subject to hacks of their RDS and EAS systems, ransomware attacks, and malware attacks. What can you do to protect your operations and ensure that you are able to serve your audience? Our closing session features a panel of cybersecurity experts from a wide range of backgrounds and experience who will discuss:

Presenter Bios

Tracy Cleeton is Chief Technology Officer for Saga Communications, where he also previously worked as the Director of IT and Director of Infrastructure. Prior to entering the field of broadcasting, he worked in manufacturing overseeing IT operations in the Americas for Oetiker Inc. Tracy has focused his career on network architecture, Microsoft solutions including AD, Exchange/Office 365/Azure and database architectures but really enjoys solving/simplifying/clarifying any business problem with the use of technology. Cybersecurity has been a passion of Tracy’s since long before it was an industry, and before many businesses even appreciated the challenges.

Dr. Phil Hoffman
is Assistant Dean of Media and General Manager at Ball State Public Media (BSPM). BSPM includes Ball State PBS and Indiana Public Radio, a radio network serving NPR news in East Central Indiana and the Indianapolis suburbs. A veteran public media leader, Phil has served in Ohio, Missouri, and Florida as a leader of public media stations. His media career began in Akron, Ohio at WKDD and WAKR. He also worked as a reporter and producer at WAKC TV in Akron and led 91.3 The Summit in Akron for nearly a decade.

Wayne M. Pecena
is the Associate Director of Educational Broadcast Services at Texas A&M University. Wayne has over 50 years of broadcast and IP network engineering experience and holds BS and MS degrees from Texas A&M University. Wayne is a Fellow of the Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE), a past President and holds the Certified Professional Broadcast Engineer (CPBE) and Certified Broadcast Network Engineer (CBNE) certifications including all specialty endorsements from the SBE. He was named the 2012 SBE Educator of the Year, the 2014 Radio World Engineer of the Year, and was named an IEEE-BTS Distinguished Lecturer in 2018. He is an author and a frequent industry speaker on IP Networking and cybersecurity topics for the broadcast and media technology professional.

Shane Toven is Senior Broadcast Engineer for the the Educational Media Foundation, and is tasked with engineering R&D for the network and looking toward “what’s next” in broadcast technology. He has been involved in the field of broadcast engineering for over 30 years, starting as a volunteer for KAXE-FM (Grand Rapids, MN) where he learned the trade and became their first full-time engineer. In 2006, Shane joined Wyoming Public Media at the University of Wyoming as their Director of Engineering. In 2017, he joined Educational Media Foundation.
